Bourke's

Bourkes' Irish Grocer shop was on the corner of Ladypool Road and Stratford Road all the time I've lived in Birmingham (30+ years now) until it wasn't.

Bourkes' had veggies including cabbages that were a dark and definite Savoy-like green but with lighter almost white inner leaves. The sweeds were clean and bright orange/yellow inside with cream to purple skins. The carrots would brighten any winter's day with their orangeness. Brown soda bread sold in paper bags and white crusty cob like rolls. Various tins and condiments and a range of Irish whiskies. Including Paddy's that it was my duty to buy a bottle of one day when a colleague was leaving. Meats of various kinds and sausages and some cheese. Milk, butter and pies in a fridge.

Over the decades Bourke and the customers aged and the customers became fewer. Something that was part of my background, a place that was always just there suddenly wasn't. Just some old shelves broken up in a skip.
